Background
I was born and raised in the Qualla Community, and am the third generation to live on our family farm. I attended North Carolina State University, and have over 30 years experience working in construction finance. I am honored to serve my community by participating in positions such as the EBCI Governing Board of Audit and Ethics, and the Eastern Band of Cherokees Planning Board. I have life long experience with the benefits of belonging to a local community as well as the challenges of living in rural Western North Carolina.
In my free time I organize and participate in our community roadside trash pickup, volunteer on my church finance and event committees, and travel with my husband to visit our son who is attending graduate school.
VISION
If elected, I have the clear goal of being YOUR voice in North Carolina government. Since Covid, many of us have been missing the community that we have always depended on in Western North Carolina. I would like to see us return to a place where we pull together to help each other up, rather than focus on our differences. The prioritization of our children, healthcare, elders and local economy is imperative to the success of the state. We need to be loud and heard to make sure we are not overlooked in the distribution of state resources simply because we are rural communities.
ISSUES
If elected, your voices and issues are what I would carry with me to Raleigh. Among these, I feel that the following impact us directly:
Balancing the Budget: The North Carolina House and Senate have been unable to reach an agreement on a balanced budget. Safeguards need to be put in place so that this is not a legislative option, and withholding services from residents is no longer used as a political tool.
Medicaid Funding: If the state does not agree on funding for this program, Medicaid will be underfunded in North Carolina. Many medical services will be cancelled, starting with rural communities and our healthcare options.
Education: North Carolina is ranked LAST in the country for dollars spent per child in public education. This is a sad state of affairs, and needs to be addressed beginning with teacher pay.
